Families of veterans and those who are still serving in the military may want to check out the part of the VA’s website that is designed for kids and educators. The site is organized into three parts:
- VA Kids, K-5th
- VA Kids, 6-12th
- VA Kids Teachers’ Page
Early elementary-school aged children can access information about veterans, the American flag, the Department of Veterans Affairs, games and activities and helpful links.
Older kids should take a look at the site’s page titled, “VA Volunteer and Scholarship Info.” The VA maintains a Student Volunteer Program that kids might be interested in participating in to meet their community service requirements. High school students whose parents served in the military can review the variety of scholarships and grant programs available to dependents.
Finally, educators who need help planning their curriculums can access information for their students and a link that will help connect you with a Veteran Guest Speaker. As the site states, there are many veterans that would be happy to be called upon to speak to schools.
