According to a Washington news station, the VA is demanding that the family of a widow who was receiving surviving spouse benefits repay the last month of benefits she received before she died.
Ruth McDonald was married to Claude McDonald, a WWII veteran who was the recipient of two purple hearts and a bronze star for saving another soldier’s life. When he passed away, his wife was eligible for survivor’s benefits and received $1,633 per month from the VA.
Mrs. McDonald died in an assisted living facility on June 26 at age 89 and now the VA wants the full $1,633 payment for June back from McDonald’s estate. According to a statement by the VA:
“Upon the death of a surviving spouse, the VA will pay benefits through the last day of the month before the death.”
Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) is on the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs and plans to meet with the VA to try to change the regulation.
