VA and DoD team up to expedite veterans disability claims process

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) are teaming up to expand a program created in 2007 aimed at streamlining the disability claims process for servicemembers separating from the military.

The “Disability Evaluation System” (DES) program has been in place at 21 military facilities and six new bases have been added to the program.

The new locations for the program will be:

  • Fort Benning
  • Fort Bragg
  • Fort Hood
  • Fort Lewis
  • Fort Riley
  • Portsmouth Naval Medical Center

The program eliminates the standard two-step process that most servicemembers have to endure to get their benefits approved. Under DES, servicemen and women who are retiring or facing a medical discharge undergo a single physical exam to determine their fitness for duty and eligibility for VA disability compensation.
