The 2014 National Veterans Creative Arts Festival

Veterans and their supporters around the nation are prepping for the upcoming 2014 National Veterans Creative Arts Festival (NVCAF). This years’ event will be held at the Milwaukee Theatre at 500 West Kilbourn Avenue in Milwaukee. The NVCAP is the grand finale and final competition of the winners of the local VA art and talent competitions that took place throughout country.

The NVCAP Competition

The winners from local VA competitions are invited to compete at the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival competition. Thousands of veterans competed at local VA medical facilities around the nation. The top 120 winners will exhibit their creative works at this years’ NVCAF.

The eligible veterans can compete in one of the following categories.

  • Creative writing
  • Dance
  • Drama
  • Music

The event is an important, much-anticipated culmination of the hard work and creative contributions that veterans around the country have made. Creative arts are an integral part of the VA’s recreation therapy programs, which many disabled veterans flourish in. The VA explains: “This annual competition recognizes the progress and recovery made through that therapy, and raises the visibility of the creative achievements of our Nation’s Veterans after disease, disability or life crisis.”

The festival runs from October 27 to November 2, 2014. The event opens to the public on the final day of the festival. The Art Exhibit will be held from 12:00 to 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, and the stage show begins at 2:00 p.m. The event is free, but tickets to the show are still required.  You can call (414) 389-4099 for complimentary tickets.

If you’re enrolled at a VA Medical Center or Outpatient Clinic and would like to compete in next year’s creative arts competition, contact the recreation/creative arts therapy department at your local VA facility.
