According to a San Francisco Chronicle blog, the DoD has a deadline of October 24, 2009, to delineate the procedure veterans must follow to claim compensation for being “stop-lossed.”
Earlier this year, Congress agreed to issue a $500 payment for every month that a service member was required to stay in the military beyond their end of contract. Commonly called a “stop-loss,” this military regulation has been used since 9/11 to maintain “continuity in units.”
More than 185,000 veterans who were stop-lossed between September 11, 2001 and today will qualify for the backpay. Eligible veterans must file a claim by October 24, 2010.
