The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs is being criticized for poor management decisions and overspending at two nursing homes the department manages.
The board that oversees the department has petitioned government auditors to examine the management of the government agency that serves Wisconsin veterans. A recent investigation conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Justice led to the firing of a state veterans home administrator. Unauthorized spending unveiled by the DOJ’s investigation included a:
- $250,000 fire truck
- $210,000 worth of storage systems
- $183,000 automated tablet packaging system for medications
Some speculate that, amidst allegations of mismanagement at the department, the Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs, John Scocos, will be replaced. Scocos, a member of the U.S. Army Reserve, recently returned from Iraq after a second tour of duty in the war.
