Wounded veterans are discovering the healing and rehabilitation that fly fishing can offer through a unique program in Sun Valley, Idaho. Sun Valley Adaptive Sports was created five years ago as a sports and recreation program for severely injured service members.
The organization is one of 100 chapters of the Disabled Sports/USA nonprofit which was established in 1967 by Vietnam veterans. Using sports and recreation as therapy for wounded veterans builds their confidence, develops their physical skills and helps them to reintegrate into their communities after returning home from the war.
A recent week-long fly fishing camp is just one of the eight such clinics the Sun Valley Adaptive Sports program sponsors each year. The nonprofit group provides for the veteran’s and their spouse’s expenses for the trip and also compensates the family for child care costs incurred so that parents can attend the camp. Additionally, therapists consult with the veterans before and after their trip and provide follow-up care for three years.
