Native American veterans advocates to testify for Congressional committee

Healthcare workers from Monday are scheduled to testify before the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs this week. Kevin Howlett and Buck Richardson work with tribes in Colorado and Montana and will contribute their personal experiences to the discussion on how to deliver healthcare to veterans in rural areas.

The issue is one of particular interest for Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) who authored the “Rural Veterans Health Care Improvement Act.” Tester, a member of the VA committee, hopes that testimony and discussion regarding the issue will help different agencies collaborate to address the needs of Indian veterans, according to the Billings Gazette.

Approximately 4,500 Native American veterans are enrolled in the VA, however many more are thought to live in Montana, alone.
