Healthcare Challenges for Women Vets

More VA hospitals are working to address the ways in which healthcare for female soldiers and veterans has been somewhat lacking. In the past, this problem could be attributed, in part, to the fact that the majority of patients in VA hospitals were men.

With more than 230,000 women having served in Iraq and Afghanistan, there is likely to be an increase in the number of female soldiers and veterans in search of healthcare and support from VA hospitals.

The Milwaukee VA has enacted a relatively new Women Veterans Program that is intended to address the specific concerns of women veterans and their military injuries. The hospital has established the program to ensure that female patients are seen by doctors that specialize in women’s healthcare. The VA hospital also purchased additional equipment that is useful in diagnosing and treating female veterans.

Female soldiers and veterans may suffer from a variety of service related ailments, including:

  • Service-connected disability
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Severe combat related injuries or disability
