Governor Charlie Crist of Florida recognized the exemplary service of thousands of volunteers in the VA healthcare system in his state this week. The VA Sunshine Healthcare Network utilized the services of more than 6,800 volunteers in 2007-2008 and raised $1.7 million to benefit VA hospitals in Florida. The volunteers donated 715,000 hours of service which is the equivalent of 295 full-time employees.
Services provided by the volunteers include:
- Escorting patients
- Administrative duties
- Creative activities
- Teaching arts/crafts
- Creating memorials
- Planting trees/flowers
- Building historical trails
- Placing flags on veterans graves
The VA Sunshine Healthcare Network is based in St. Petersburg, Florida, and employs more than 18,500 Floridians. The Governors’ Points of Light Award is a weekly award that is managed by the Volunteer Florida Foundation and judged by leaders in volunteerism.
