First Lady visits the VA

Employees at the Department of Veterans Affairs’ headquarters in Washington DC had a special visitor yesterday – First Lady Michelle Obama. The First Lady spoke to addressed VA employees from a stage where she was joined by the Secretary of the VA, Eric Shinseki, and about eight employees who have worked for the VA for more than 20 years.

She told those in attendance that the VA’s mission is an important one.  She said, “”You’re their health care providers. You’re their life insurers. And you’re the key to educational opportunity for many of them..And while you do all that, you’re working to transform this very system to be the 21st century organization that’s worthy of today’s veterans and the veterans of tomorrow.”

Michelle Obama also reiterated the President’s support of veterans and the outrage that many people, including those in the current administration, feel about the issue of homeless veterans.

The President will sign the Veterans Health Care Budget Reform and Transparency Act this Thursday.
