Alaska WWII veterans pension payment approved by Senate

The Senate approved a bill yesterday that would provide for the payment of pensions of members of an Alaska Territorial Guard unit that protected Alaska during WWII.

The measure, co-sponsored by Alaska’s senators, was brought after the U.S. Army announced that service in the Guard will not be counted towards the 20-year retirement requirement. Approximately two dozen Alaskan veterans were affected by the change which decreased their pension payments in January.

State legislators quickly passed a measure to compensate for the decreased payments, however, a federal law is needed for a permanent solution to the legislative gap.
